A Journey Through Rock and Poppy – Photos from Iraq

In Nahla Valley, nestled in a mountain region near Dohuk in Northern Iraq, sits a cluster of villages so small, there are absent from official maps. There live among the last of non-diasporic Assyrians—those indigenous to parts of Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Life is difficult for the dwindling populations. These photos were taken in April 2022, following Sara on her morning routine. What appears to be a simple way of life is tangled in military unrest with which she has no involvement, her home caught in the crossfire between governments and militias rolling through these green hills.

Shot on 120mm & 35mm
